"Lost in the Mist: Capturing the Magic of a December Yosemite Elopement”

There's something magical about Yosemite National Park in December. The air is crisp, the crowds are sparse, and nature seems to whisper secrets amidst the misty clouds. It's a setting that's both ethereal and intimate, perfect for capturing the raw beauty of love against the backdrop of towering sequoias and cascading waterfalls.

And so, when I first talked with Evan and John about photographing their elopement in Yosemite during this moody season, I knew it would be a unique and unforgettable experience.

In a cozy Airbnb, rain tapping on the windowpanes, and their was so much excitement and anticipation. That's where our day began, as we geared up for an epic adventure capturing love in the misty wonderland of Yosemite National Park. Before hitting the road, we orchestrated a first look. They were both excited and nervous at the same time, but as soon as they laid eyes on each other, it was magic.

It finally came time to leave for Yosemite National Park, the misty rain serving as a poetic prelude to the day's unfolding narrative. The journey through winding roads and majestic landscapes only added to the sense of anticipation, each turn bringing us closer to the untamed beauty awaiting us.

As we arrived at Yosemite, mist draped the landscape like a dreamy veil. It was a pure fairytale. Against this enchanting backdrop, the couple exchanged vows, with their parents and best friends as witnesses.

Throughout the day, we chased moments of intimacy amidst the mist and towering trees. Rain came and went, but we embraced the spontaneity of it all, finding hidden spots to soak it all in. As blue hour approached and the last light kissed the landscape, I felt a rush of gratitude. Being part of this beautiful journey.

But the magic didn't end there. We returned to the Airbnb ready to celebrate with dinner and cake. Laughter filled the air as we gathered around, recounting the day's adventures and toasting to the newlyweds.

As Dan and I said our goodbyes and headed home, the memory of their elopement against the misty Yosemite backdrop lingered. It was a reminder that love thrives in every weather, and adventure awaits those willing to embrace it, rain or shine.

"Dawn was there every step of the way to both help us plan our elopement and to discuss what the process would be like before during and after. When the time came, we decided to elope to Yosemite National Park and she and her husband got there a few days before us and scouted out good areas for the wedding ceremony as well as potential areas to take pictures throughout the park. Dawn captures both intimate moments and pictures in action and has great creative ideas to bring those moments to life. This was easily the best decision we made when it came to planning this trip and our special day and such a great investment to make our wedding day everything we hoped and prayed for. We can't thank Dawn and Dan enough for their kindness and attention to detail. We will never forget this experience!" Evan & John

One of the most captivating aspects of photographing an elopement in Southwest Colorado during the fall is the interplay of light, color, and the ever-changing weather. As we climb in elevation, the weather can shift rapidly, adding an element of unpredictability to the day. Our day started out against the backdrop of golden aspens and snow-capped peaks. It was sunny and very nice for early October but that quickly changed once we started out off-road adventure!

As the day progressed the soft, golden glow of the autumn sun bathed the landscape in a warm, ethereal light, casting enchanting shadows and highlighted the vibrant hues of the changing leaves. In the heart of the Rocky Mountains, where the air is crisp and the landscapes are awe-inspiring, lies a magical destination perfect for an intimate wedding ceremony - Maroon Bells, Colorado. This picturesque location, surrounded by snow-capped peaks and alpine lakes, sets the stage for a romantic elopement, especially during the warm embrace of July. Imagine saying your vows amidst the beauty of nature, with close family by your side, capturing every moment as you explore the iconic Maroon Bells for photos, followed by a private dinner prepared by a chef in the comfort of your AirBNB. Let's delve into the details of this dreamy elopement experience.

Maroon Bells, nestled within the Maroon-Snowmass Wilderness, is renowned for its breathtaking scenery. Towering peaks of maroon-colored rocks, reflected in the pristine Maroon Lake, create a backdrop that is nothing short of enchanting. July brings a burst of wildflowers, adding to the already stunning landscape. The crisp mountain air and the gentle rustling of aspen leaves set the stage for an intimate and memorable celebration.

These two chose to exchanging vows amidst the towering aspen trees, in the ceremony space created in the middle of the Bells. The serene ambiance of Maroon Lake, with its mirror-like reflection of the surrounding peaks, provided an ethereal backdrop for their commitment to one another. With close family as witnesses, they had a beautiful mix of American and Indian tradition. The groom, wanted to include a few of the special traditions, many times the groom gifts the bride with a necklace of black and gold, the mangala sutra(auspicious thread) and with that the bride is said to receive special blessings throughout the marriage. Another special tradition is gifts of gold from parents, which was a gold chain for him, and a gold bangle for her. I felt so honored to witness so many beautiful traditions, this ceremony became a cherished and intimate affair, surrounded by the beauty of nature.

After the vows have been exchanged, we took the opportunity to explore the surroundings for some unforgettable photos. We wandered along the Crater Lake Trail & ventured into the Maroon-Snowmass Wilderness for more secluded spots. The July weather gave us vibrant wildflowers in full bloom, creating a colorful tapestry against the majestic mountains. There was no shortage of breathtaking backdrops to immortalize this special day.

After a day of adventure and love, we returned to a cozy AirBNB for an intimate dinner prepared by a private chef. This personalized dining experience allowed everyone to savor a delicious meal crafted to their preferences, without the distractions of a crowded restaurant. Toast were made, with many laughs and even some tears, as wonderful stories were told during this private celebration.

Conclusion: Eloping at Maroon Bells in July with close family offers a unique and intimate wedding experience surrounded by the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains. In a world filled with grandiose weddings and elaborate ceremonies, some couples opt for a more intimate and adventurous route to tie the knot. The San Juan Mountains of Colorado, with their breathtaking landscapes and rugged charm, provide the perfect backdrop for an elopement that is as unique as the love it celebrates. Kristina and Trever journeyed into the heart of the mountains, where accompanied only by her grandparents, embarked on a memorable and off-the-beaten-path celebration of their union.

Nestled in the southwestern part of Colorado, the San Juan Mountains are a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Towering peaks and alpine meadows create a picture-perfect environment for an elopement that promises both serenity and excitement. The couple chose this scenic location to exchange their vows, surrounded by the grandeur of nature and the love of their closest family members.

Intimacy was the key to this elopement, with only the couple and the bride's grandparents in attendance. The small guest list allowed for a deeply personal and meaningful ceremony, where every moment was shared with those who held a special place in the couple's hearts. The bond between generations added a touch of nostalgia and wisdom to the celebration.

The couple chose a secluded spot with panoramic views of the San Juan Mountains for their ceremony. Against the backdrop of snow-capped peaks and the crisp mountain air, they exchanged heartfelt vows, promising a lifetime of love and adventure. The bride's grandparents, witnesses to decades of love themselves, added a touch of wisdom and warmth to the ceremony.

As the day unfolded, the groom's vintage car took center stage. This classic vehicle wasn't just any car; it held a special place in the couple's hearts. A few years prior, the groom, along with his late father, had painstakingly rebuilt the car. The vintage car became more than just a mode of transportation; it became a symbol of cherished memories and a connection to the groom's past. Every rev of the engine echoed the love and dedication poured into its restoration. The groom's father, who had passed away before seeing the completion of their project, was present in spirit, adding an emotional layer to the elopement. The vintage car, now a tangible representation of the bond between father and son, added a profound depth to the day's celebration.

After the vows were exchanged and rings were placed on fingers, the celebration took an adventurous turn. The couple, eager to infuse their day with a sense of exploration, embarked on an off-roading adventure through the rugged mountain terrain. Dan and I and our Jeep Rubicon took them to remote and breathtaking locations, providing an exhilarating experience that perfectly complemented the thrill of their newfound commitment.

Eloping in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado proved to be a whimsical and unforgettable experience for this couple and their cherished guests. Against the backdrop of nature's grandeur, the intimacy of the ceremony, the thrill of off-roading adventures, and the timeless allure of a vintage car with a poignant history created a day that was as unique and extraordinary as the love it celebrated. Large breathtaking mountains created a stunning backdrop for this elopement in Summit County, Colorado. Summit county, as it’s name implies is full of big mountains including the 10 mile range that includes, Arapahoe Basin, Breckinridge, Copper Mountain, and Keystone. The mountains are within a 30 minute drive of each other, exploring multiple areas is so easy. Dillon Reservoir sits right in the middle of these adventurous mountains. This intimate family-centered elopement in Summit County came with a sweet puppy and a private chef. Mackenzie and Tyler wanted to get married with 12 of their closest family and friends so they got an AirBNB together in Keystone and said their vows at Sapphire Point while overlooking Dillon Reservoir.

These two had been together 4 years when they contacted me. They told me they had been putting off wedding planning and they were looking for alternatives to a big traditional wedding. Then they stumbled upon adventure style elopements and got super excited about the idea of eloping with your best people in a breathtaking location.

While chatting about locations and time of year, they decided late July would work best for them. When they saw pictures from one of my past elopements at Sapphire Point, they fell in love with the area and knew this was location was going to be perfect.

They had the sweetest first look at their AirBNB in Keystone then we drove up to Sapphire Point for their beautiful ceremony. The blue sky and warm sunshine provided the perfect contrast to the towering mountain backdrop. As the family gathered before the ceremony, we all took a moment to take in the spectacular views and the cute chipmunks running around . McKenzie and Tyler said their vows in the shade of an evergreen tree with their families and baby pup as witnesses.

After the “I do’s” we went exploring around the lake for some fun & adventurous photos before meeting back up in Keystone where they had hired a private chef to make dinner. Everything about this day was intentional which created some of the most precious memories for this incredible couple and their families. These two and their families welcomed us into their lives like we’d known each other for years. We were honored to be the ones to capture these life long memories.

Twin Lakes, Colorado Summer Elopement

When Sarah and Gavin first contacted me and told me they wanted to elope in Colorado but have never been so they had no idea how to start. All they knew was, it would be just the two of them and they wanted beautiful mountains as a back drop. One of the first places I thought of was Twin Lakes, for its beauty and easy access.

Are you hoping to elope but have no idea how to plan or even where to go? Look into central Colorado! Twin Lakes, Buena Vista, and Independence Pass are all breathtaking.

Twin Lakes is a big beautiful pair of glacier carved alpine lakes, with awe inspiring mountains in the near distance to create glorious views. About 20 minutes south on highway 24 is the little town of Buena Vista, which is situated between the towering Collegiate Peaks and the flowing Arkansas river. So if you’re looking for things to do beyond the Lakes, white water rafting, mountain biking, and more hiking tails than you can count are just a short drive away!

Since they had never been to Colorado before, I wanted to be mindful of elevation change and avoiding big long hikes. The more we talked it through, the more perfect this area became. So they found an AirBNB and all they wanted, was to experience Colorado in a fun low stress way and commit themselves to each other somewhere in between.

When we arrived at Sarah and Gavin’s AirBNB the first thing I noticed was the view. The house was on a hill that overlooked the lake with Mt. Elbert hovering in the near distance. It had been raining that morning so the sky was overcast but the clouds were just starting to break up and a little bit of sunshine was peeking through, it was gorgeous. These two wanted a super relaxed day with a slow morning, so we planned to start our time together mid afternoon with one of their favorite things-cooking together. They decided to make pizza, and watching them roll out the dough and toss it in the air brought so much laughter and the connection between these two was so sweet and caring. Dan and I felt like we were immediately invited into their lives for a very special day ahead.

After helping each other get dressed, we decided to venture out to find the perfect location to say their vows. Because it had rained all night we wanted to stay away from muddy trails, we steered them to a gulch with dark green pines and long yellow green grass. The open view of blue gray mountains in the back ground was the perfect compliment of color. We hiked to the open space and the smell of the pine was intoxicating. Once we arrived and took a moment to look around, Sarah and Gavin were ready to say their vows and commit their lives to one another.

Once vows were said they were ready to play and explore the area and since we were at Twin Lakes we headed to the water. The overcast day caused the water to be bluish gray with a hint of green combined with the beige sand and we had the perfect combination for the most dreamy photos. They walked up to the waters edge to take in the vastness of the rocky mountains against the calm lake. They ran along the beach, jumped into each others arms and made life long memories of their most special day.

This day ended with their favorite dessert and drinks. As blue hour was fast approaching, the overcast sky was thick with blues and purples. Sarah and Gavin did one last walk with lanterns across the immense mountain landscape. The orange light glow on their faces and was the perfect contrast as night was fast approaching. This was such a special day Dan and I will never forget and are so grateful we were given the privilege to capture these incredibly special forever memories.

How to elope in Ouray, Colorado

When I first started photographing elopements in Ouray (pronounced “your-Ray) it was not a well known area but since that time it’s popularity has grown. Ouray is located in what’s call a “box canyon “ which means the town is surrounded by tall , jagged mountains. The San Juan Mountains (which is part of the larger Rocky Mountain range) in south west Colorado are breathtaking!

When I first started photographing elopements one of the first places I went was in Ouray (pronounced “your-Ray) and I was completely blown away by its incredible beauty. Ouray is located in what’s call a “box canyon” which means the town is surrounded by tall , jagged mountains. The San Juan Mountains (which is part of the larger Rocky Mountain range) in south west Colorado are breathtaking! It has rightly earned the name “The Outdoor Recreation Capitol of Colorado” this is because it’s an off-roading mecca & a hikers paradise with tons of mountain biking trails nearby. This whole area is a complete dream, with water falls. hot springs, gorgeous scenic drives with trailheads along the way to take you to breathtaking turquoise alpine lakes.

If you want to get married in Ouray County, obtaining a marriage license is pretty easy. Go to the county clerks office and make sure you both have your drivers license or passport. It’s important to know that you can only get your marriage license within 35 days of the ceremony in Colorado, so make your plan to get it sometime in the four weeks before your big day. The cost is $30 and you can get the license on the same day as your ceremony . In the state of Colorado you can self-solemnize your vows, which means you aren’t required to have an officiant marry you. Also witnesses are not required in CO. Keep in mind some locations require a permit. Permits can run from $100-$350, it all depends on where you choose and how many guest.

Ouray has a lot of lodging options between Hotels, AirBNB’s and VRBO’s and everything has a view! Some hotels even have their own private hot springs for their guest for pay a small and enjoy time in a natural hot tub:) There’s also several Jeep rental locations, which is something to seriously consider if you don’t have a vehicle equipped with 4WD for off-roading to get to some of the most popular elopement locations.

Colorado weather can be erratic, so keep an open mind when planning your elopement. It can snow in May and summertime afternoon rain showers are common. Evenings can get cold and on top of a mountain pass it can be very windy and chilly. Colorado gets a lot of sunshine which can make winter days feel pretty mild. Keep in mind, most ceremony locations because of the back roads, which leads to the epic views are closed from snow October-May.

If you want to elope with gorgeous fall colors, Ouray has some of the very best in the whole state. The usual peak for those brilliant yellows are the last week of September and the first week of October.

You may still have more specific questions, and I’d love for you to contact me so we can talk in more detail. In the meantime enjoy looking through this beautiful Fall Ouray elopement.

San Diego Beach Elopement

When Zanna and Sebastian first got engaged, the first thing they did was contact me to let me know “we want to elope but we don’t know where!” I asked her what they love and if they have a favorite location or if they wanted to experience somewhere new? They said they love the ocean and mountains.. After a lot of conversations we ended up choosing San Diego, with its beautiful cliffs overlooking the Pacific ocean.

Everything these two planned was 100% intentional and with deep meaning. Their elopement was filled with laughter, love and even an intimate picnic. The day started at their airbnb very relaxed and chill. They wanted a super relaxed day, so we took photos in their Star Wars Tees and playing in the kitchen.

Sebastian got ready first and left with my husband, Dan, to head out to Windansea Park to get ready for a first look. As Zanna got ready at the Airbnb I was able to catch some sweet moments. When she was ready we jumped in my car to head out for their first look. We found a gorgeous location for them to see each other for the first time. It was a large cliff that sat high above the ocean and it was absolutely stunning!

We climbed down to the beach for their vows. Dan had the privilege of officiating their elopement. They also wrote personal vows that were touching and had a ton of funny moments as well. These two were so relaxed, because they were able to create a day perfect for them.

After the ceremony, Zanna had arranged for a picnic on the beach as a surprise for Sebastian. This was so special because they had a picnic on their first date. So she made arrangements with popuppicnic.co and they created a beautiful spread nestled in the rocky cliffs with a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean. It was a perfect way for them to celebrate after committing their lives to each other minutes before.

When the picnic was done, we spent the rest of the time taking photos on the beach until it got too dark. We had such a blast documenting this perfect day for these two.

When Jenni and Travis first contacted me, they were asking for a date that I wasn’t available. At first we were all bummed but after sharing dates I did had available they decided to move their date so they could have me photograph their elopement. I was over the moon, to say the least!

The memories of this day are still so thick- sunrise at Twin Lakes, getting ready at their Airbnb, a beautiful valley to say their vows with their dearest love ones, and hiking to the Continental Divide for sunset photos. I re-live these moments every time I look through these photos.

Jenni and Travis love living a relaxed life, Sunday afternoon picnics are a must. She loves to cook, he loves to play music and they both love good wine. So our morning sunrise session had to include a breakfast picnic and dinner that night included 3 private chefs and a very special menu. They both love hiking and outdoor adventures, so it made perfect sense that they wanted to start their marriage in the mountains.

As always Colorado sunsets don’t disappoint, and on this day, it was one of the most colorful and magical moments. We couldn’t get over how vibrant the sky was as we hiked down, I just couldn’t stop clicking my camera! Once we reached the parking lot we all hopped in our car together to go meet up with their families for dinner prepared by 3 amazing chefs.

The night ended with dinner and dancing on the deck of their airbnb. It was a perfect day from beginning to end.
